“Traditionally, I spend winter with the watercolors, returning to the oils in the spring when I can keep my studio windows open. By spring, after a winter of working on paper, I am ready to challenge myself with larger pieces. As a result, the oils have come to comprise mostly larger works and the two media of watercolor and oil have remained in my mind as separate as winter and summer.
This year I decided to work with the oils in a smaller format, not realizing that this change would do a great deal to bring the two media into closer alignment. The watercolors tend to have emotional clarity, a “lightness of being” made transcendent due to their transparent nature. These small oil paintings look to last year’s watercolors for emotional guidance.”
This show represents a selection of new oils from the spring and summer of 2019 and watercolors from the winter of 2018 / 2019.
