John Chang and Melinda Cootsona
John Chang’s work expresses the duality of his Chinese and American experience by juxtaposing traditional and unconventional symbols and images through the application of mixed media. Deconstructed Chinese Calligraphy layered over segments of world history and references to modern pop-culture depict his personal transformation.
Melinda Lomax Cootsona is a native of Northern California. Born and raised near Stanford University, she has been greatly influenced by the Bay Area artistic tradition as well as the creative, entrepreneurial spirit of Silicon Valley. Having painted for over 30 years, Melinda’s current work focuses on the strength of the female form. Her paintings are created with layers of oil paint and often cold wax, applied and then scraped away revealing figures that fill the canvas in varying poses of contemplation or reflection in abstracted surroundings. Whether in a soft or a harsh surrounding, the strength of the figure is primary.
